vision benefits for children

Children with myopia (nearsightedness) experience significantly higher levels of depression and anxiety than do their peers. The study by Orbis International also reveals that surgery to correct strabismus significantly improves depression and anxiety symptoms in children.

"The very strongest evidence we found for an impact on mental health was among kids with near-sightedness, which is treatable with a simple pair of glasses," said Prof. Nathan Congdon, Director of Research at Orbis International.

Children with vision impairment tend to participate in fewer physical activities, have lower academic achievement, and are more socially isolated. Further, common vision conditions, like strabismus, can affect children’s appearance, which can hurt their confidence and feelings of social belonging. It can also affect their ability to carry out certain activities.

Dr. Kirschbaum, VSP network eye doctor says that children should have their first eye exam at six months old, then at three years old, and yearly thereafter. According to the American Optometric Association, 80% of learning is visual. Annual comprehensive eye exams help ensure that kids can do their best in school, sports and other activities they enjoy.
