Research Finds “Inextricable Link” Between Oral and Mental Health for Older Americans

Dental

Delta Dental recently released their Senior Mental and Oral Health Report. This survey of over 1,000 older Americans found an “inextricable link” between older adults’ mental and oral health, with mental health challenges contributing to a lack of oral care. If dental care is neglected, then it can create a vicious circle and exacerbate feelings of depression.

Filling The Dental Insurance Coverage Gap

Thirty percent of U.S. adults don’t have dental insurance. In fact, three times more adults lack dental insurance than health insurance, according to a survey by CareQuest Institute. Twenty-five percent of people without dental insurance say their health has gotten worse over the past year compared to 20% of those with dental insurance. Disparities in oral health are found in many populations including people of color, low-income or uninsured people, and veterans.
